Hi everyone, my name is Sandra and am a newish member of Parkwood. I am relatively new to the world of DSLR photography, however the subject has me well and truly 'hooked! I have a Canon 450d which I am still getting to grips with, I am in the process of purchasing a zoom lens and would be grateful for any information regarding experiences with Canon/Sigma/Tamron you may have. I look forward to using the forum. Smile

Hi Sandra,

I'm also new to DSLRs and have a Canon 450D.
My experiences so far with zoom lenses are the 18-55mm kit lens and a Tamron 70-300mm. I've also borrowed a fiends wide-angle, might have been something like a 10-12mm and his 70-250mm L series.

What you think of a lens I guess depends on your past experiences and current expectations. I expected my shiny new 450D to produce near perfect pictures, sadly this is usually not the case. Not because of the cameras electronics but because of the lenses I have. I believe the Canon L series lenses are their professional lenses and are prices as such, but they do produce very sharp images.

In one of the camera magazines recently they reviewed a bunch of "Superzoom" lenses and the Sigma 18-200 came out very well, and is reasonably priced (in the grand scheme of things). So I'm probably going to save up and buy that myself and use it as my general purpose walk-about lens.

Cheers,
Shaun

For a wide angle zoom don't look further than the Sigma 10-20. It's a beautiful lens, had very good write ups and will be a lot cheaper than Canon's own.

Peter is bang on. Its a great lens. I unfortunately had to trade mine in because it's not full frame and I hardly ever use my 350d anymore so I've got the Sigma 15-30 now.
